Hamid Drake – ein av vår tids aller beste trommisar innan jazz- og improvisasjonsmusikk – kjem til Vossa Jazz!
Sidan 70-talet har han jobba med storleikar som Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Fred Anderson, Archie Shepp, David Murray og Peter Brötzmann. Drake er kjend for å inkorporera afro-cubanske, indiske og afrikanske element i spelinga si, og han spelar ofte utan stikker, noko som gjev rom for subtil dynamikk med hender og fingrar.
Han kjem til Vossa Jazz med ei gruppe strålande musikarar for å heidra Alice Coltrane. Den fantastiske multiinstrumentalisten har vore ei viktig inspirasjonskjelde for eit utal musikarar i moderne tid. Ho la vekt på dei andelege aspekta ved musikken og var ein pioner innan spiritual jazz-rørsla.
Som kunstnar og andeleg lærar hadde ho ei utruleg evne til å bringa nye musikalske perspektiv til alle som møtte ho, eller høyrde musikken hennar.
Hamid Drake sjølv seier dette om forholdet til Alice Coltrane:
– I met Alice Coltrane at a Ravinia Festival concert, outside Chicago, when I was 16. We exchanged addresses and wrote to each other afterwards. Her creativity impacted a host of musicians and listeners. For myself it was and still is very powerful. She gifted me with a spiritual and aesthetic openness that I continually cherish. This project is my way of honoring the great being that enabled a teenager to continue on the path of discovery, wonderment and finding one’s own voice.

One of our time´s absolutely finest drummers in jazz and impro! Since the 70s Drake has worked with greats like Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Pharaoh Sanders, Archie Shepp and Peter Brötzman. He is well known for incorporating Afro-Cuban, Indian and African elements in his playing, often playing without sticks, which gives another level of subtlety. He comes to Voss honouring the great Alice Coltrane, this incredible multi-instrumentalist who weighted spiritual aspects in her music and was a pioneer within the spiritual jazz movement. “She gifted me with a spiritual and aestethic opennes that I continually cherish. This project is my way of honoring the great being that enabled a teenager to continue on the path of discovery, wonderment and finding one´s own voice” says Drake.
