Tingingsverket, som er det 31. i rekkja, har Seglem valt å kalla «Som spor». World-jazz er det mest dekkande sjanger-omgrepet som kan nyttast om musikken og lydbileta Karl Seglem skapar. Verket vil vidareutviklast i det musikalske landskapet frå tidlegare CD-utgjevingar, mellom anna ”Ossicles” frå 2010, som kalla fram femmarar og seksarar på terningane rundtom i pressa.

Med seg til festivalen har Seglem eit handplukka ensemble med Sigrid Moldestad og Håkon Høgemo på hardingfeler, Lars Jakob Rudjord og Andreas Ulvo på tangentar, Stefan Bergman på bass og gitar og Kåre Opheim på trommer og perkusjon. I tillegg til musikken kan publikum nyta konserten visuelt med bakteppe av fotograf Oddleiv Apneseth, lys- og biletedesignar Tord Knutsen. Lyddesign ved Asle Karstad.

SOM SPOR" (Like tracks) The future of jazz – Karl Seglem commissioned to compose a work for Vossa Jazz 2012

This autumn Karl Seglem was called “the future of jazz” by the German press. Now he has big plans for the Vossa Jazz Festival in 2012. Karl Seglem is one of the most exciting and innovative jazz musicians in Norway. He recently completed a major tour in Germany to glowing reviews. Seglem’s music has been called “the future of jazz”, and his stage performance has been described as “an explosive brew”.

Vossa Jazz is proud to be able to present tenor saxophonist and goat-horn master Karl Seglem as the composer for the festival’s 2012 commissioned work. The work, which is the 31st commissioned for the festival, is called "Som spor". The premiere performance will take place in the Vossasalen Hall at Park Hotel on Saturday, 31 March, 2012. “

World jazz” is the best way of describing the genre of the music and soundscape created by Karl Seglem. This new work will be a further extension of the musical landscape we have heard in his CDs Femstein, Urbs and Ossicles. Seglem has hand-picked the ensemble that will join him at the festival: Sigrid Moldestad and Håkon Høgemo on Hardanger fiddles, Lars Jakob Rudjord and Andreas Ulvo on keyboards, Stefan Bergman on bass and guitar, and Kåre Opheim on drums and percussion. n this work Seglem is continuing his collaboration with photographer Oddleiv Apneset and light and visual designer Tord Knutsen. Together with Seglem’s music, Apneset’s photographs will form the basis for a visual and poetic journey. Sound design is by Asle Karstad.

Out of the shadows, with a highly distinctive character Stuart Nicholson in Jazzwise (UK) and Terje Mosnes in Dagbladet (N) have both emphasised that nobody has carried Jan Garbarek’s legacy forward in such a personal, powerful and distinctive way as Karl Seglem. Several German critics also point out that Seglem is now taking a decisive step out of his colleague’s shadow. Karl Seglem has been awarded several prizes for his music. In 2010 he received the highest award presented by the Norwegian jazz community, the Buddy Prize. He has also received the Edvard Prize, and in 2011 won the Norwegian Folk Music Award for his last CD, Ossicles. This CD was also nominated for a Norwegian Grammy Award, Spellemannsprisen, in the open category (2010).
